Wortschatz- und Satzgebrauch - Vocabulary Phrase Usage
1. nach Hause = home (as a direction). Compare to "zu Hause" (at home, a static location).
2. In the sentence "Hast du etwas zum Schreiben?" (Do you have something to write with / something for writing), the verb "schreiben" is used as a noun. You can turn any German verb into a noun by just making the first letter a capital letter.
3. auf etwas kommen = to guess or to come up with an idea. "Darauf muss man erst mal kommen!" is an expression of admiration, like it takes someone special to come up with this.
Grammatik - Grammar
The focus of this lesson is "mal":
Ich muss dann mal nach Hause.
"I should head home"
The word „mal“ is another one of those difficult-to-translate German particles that change the flavour of a sentence. The meaning of „mal“ is best described as „sometime“, however German use it a lot more frequently than that would imply.
In this lesson we had the phrase „Sag mal, willst du mir mal deine amerikanische Adresse geben?“ - here, „mal“ is used to soften the imperative. „Sag!“ (say) would be a command, but „sag mal“ makes it more colloquial, more friendly. It's similar in „willst du mir mal deine amerikanische Adresse geben“. The implication of „mal“ is that it could be sometime in the future, doesn't have to be now, but that's just to make it a less threatening request. It is expected that you'll agree right away.
We also had „Wenn du mal in Washington bist...“, which would best be translated as „If you happen to be in Washington sometime...“. So here, „mal“ indeed means „sometime“.
