The superlative

We form the superlative by adding –ste or -este to the ending of the adjective.

adjective + ste (or) este

Example / Beispiel:

Die schönste Jahreszeit ist Frühling.

The nicest season is spring.

We form the superlative also like this:

am + adjective + sten

Example / Beispel:

Der Frühling ist am schönsten.

The spring ist he nicest.

Remark / Bemerkung:

* Some monosyllabic adjectives take an inflexion (Umlaut -¨) in the superlative like:

alt (old) -> am ältesten (the oldest)

arm (poor) -> am ärmsten (the poorest)

dumm (dumb) -> am dümmsten (the dumbest)

grob (coarse) -> am gröbsten (the coarsest)

* There are some irregular adjectives.

For example / zum Beispiel:

gut (good) -> am besten (the best)

hoch (heigh) -> am höchsten (the heighest)

viel (a lot of) -> am meisten (the most)

gern (with pleasure) -> am liebsten
