Genus der Substantive

In German we have got three genders of nouns: the masculine, the feminine and the neutral. Only the definite article can tell which gender is a German noun.

There is no rule to define the genders but there are some helpingsemi-rules, here are some of them:

1- Masculine: the nouns that end with: -er, -ler, -ig, -ich, -ling, -är, -eur, -iker, -ismus and -ist.

Examples: der Bauerder Tischlerder Honigder Lehrlingder Millionär, der Regisseur, der Politiker, der Kommunismus and der Polizist.

2- Feminine: the nouns that end with: -e, -ei, -in, -heit, -keit, -schaft and -ung.

Examples: die Scheibe, die Bäckerei, die Freundin, die Schönheit, die Flüssigkeit, die Wissenschaft and die Werbung

3- Neutral:
 the nouns that end with: -chen, -lein, -o, -ment, -um.

Examples: das Mädchen, das Männlein, das Foto, das Instrument, das Album.

Note:
 Days of the week, months of the year, seasons and cardinal points are all MASCULINE.
